Catelynn Clears the Air on Tyler and Their Daughter’s Adoption – ‘The Truth Behind the Rumors

Catelynn Lowell is pushing back on this narrative about her relationship with Tyler Baltierra.

Amid the Teen Mom: The Next Chapter’s second season, the 33-year-old slammed rumors that she had placed daughter Carly—whom she welcomed with Tyler in 2009—into adoptive care due to pressure from her now-husband.

“That’s what blows my mind, for people to think that I would choose a man over my child,” Catelynn said during the March 12 episode of the Cate & Ty: Break it Down podcast. “But then again for them to just think that you have no emotions or sadness or sorrow or any want.”

Tyler, who went on to welcome daughters Nova, 10, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3, with his wife, interjected similarly pushing back, “Or that I would give you some ultimatum? That’s insane.”

“That’s sick,” Catelynn agreed. “And then for me to continue to stay with you over all these years and have other girls. I always say if you guys really were to think that I’m that person, that’s disgusting because I teach my girls completely opposite. And they know that.”

She emphasized, “I would never stay in a relationship and let my girls think that that would be a normal, healthy thing.”

Catelynn and Tyler went on to clarify that they are done trying to fight the negative narratives that persist about them—especially when it comes to now-15-year-old Carly.

“It gets to the point where I can say the truth and you can either believe it or not,” she added. “I sleep good at night. I know my morals and my values. I know the person that I love and care about. That’s all that matters to me. I’m sick of addressing it constantly. This is my last time addressing it. I’m not a weak woman. Tyler wanted this baby just as much as I did.”

And while this is the last time Catelynn will address the circumstances for placing Carly in adoptive care, it isn’t the first time the couple has shared insight into their former predicament. On an episode of Teen Mom earlier this season, Tyler shared that his poor relationship with his father, Butch Baltierra, contributed to the couple’s decision to place Carly with adoptive parents.

“I was just so scared to screw it up,” Tyler said of becoming a teen parent. “I think that was the catalyst for me and Cate, wanting to heal ourselves before we brought more kids into the world.”

Viewers watched Catelynn Lowell and now-husband Tyler Baltierra make the difficult choice to place their first daughter, Carly, for adoption, in 2009 on the inaugural season of 16 and Pregnant. After 13 years together, the fan-favorite couple wed in August 2015 and have since had three more daughters: NovaleeVaeda and Rya.

While the absence of Carly—who lives with her adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis—still aches, the couple keep fighting for a future.

Their hope is their bond "is whatever she wants," Catelynn told E! News in January 2025. "Whether she just wants a relationship with her biological siblings, if she wants to have a relationship with us, awesome. If she doesn't, totally understand. Whatever that looks like for her. Because it needs to be adoptee-centered."
