The Chicago Cubs continue to turn over every rock in their quest to field a competitive bullpen. This time, the team is adding an interesting reliever with breakout potential.
With this pitching infrastructure, left-hander Tom Cosgrove has the chance to be this year's Tyson Miller. The 28-year-old comes over from his original franchise, the San Diego Padres. However, his journey has been inconsistent since his debut in 2023.
Primarily throwing the sweeper, the Cubs obviously see something in his repertoire that can make a difference, even though he will have to spend some time in Triple-A Iowa first.
This year's bullpen has experienced a few hiccups. Given some struggles, it is more likely than not that Cosgrove will get his chance to find a permanent spot on the Cubs' staff.
However, the same cannot be said for Caleb Kilian. To make room on the 40-man roster, the right-hander becomes the odd man out following a disappointing tenure with the Cubs.
Since coming over from the Giants in the Kris Bryant trade, Kilian has struggled to seize opportunities and make the expected impact. Now, he will look to catch on elsewhere or work his way back onto the roster.
By giving up only cash considerations, the Cubs are acquiring a low-risk arm in Tom Cosgrove. If he exceeds expectations with the help of the team's immaculate pitching lab, he could be one of the better bargains on the roster.
If not, it still won’t stop the Cubs from finding quality talent through this route. The team has had some success stories in the past.
