Everyone wins except the Pelicans, but Cam Smith provided a highlight there anyway
Right-hander Eduarniel Nunez was promoted to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.
Left-hander Riley Martin was activated off the development list and Iowa right-hander Riley Thompson was moved to development list. Ahh, the life of Riley.
First baseman Matt Mervis was activated off the injured list. Outfielder Cole Roederer was sent to Double-A Tennessee from Iowa.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs poached the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers), 6-5 in ten innings.
Jordan Wicks had a strong rehab start, pitching four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. He struck out four and walked no one. Wicks threw 53 pitches and 34 were strikes.
Keegan Thompson pitched the ninth and tenth innings and got the win. Thompson retired all six batters he faced, striking out one. He did allow one unearned run in the tenth as the runner on second scored after two groundouts.
Center fielder Kevin Alcántara went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Alcántara led off the top of the tenth with an RBI double and scored in the fourth inning on an RBI single from shortstop Luis Vazquez.
Vazquez was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.
First baseman Matt Mervis was 2 for 5 with an RBI single in the tenth in his return to Iowa.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies speared the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins), 2-1.
Starter Sam Armstrong went six innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Shortstop Fabian Pertuz laid down a walk-off RBI bunt single in the bottom of the ninth, scoring pinch runner Parker Chavers. Pertuz was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Chavers was running for DH Pablo Aliendo, who led off the ninth with a double. Aliendo was 2 for 4 and scored Tennessee’s other run in the fifth inning.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs shot down the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins), 3-2.
Grant Kipp got his first win of the season after pitching six scoreless innings. Kipp surrendered just two hits. He struck out four and walked no one.
Mitchell Tyranski came on to get the save in the top of the ninth with the Cubs leading 3-0. But he gave up two runs and left the game after taking a comebacker to the mound. So Jose Romero had to enter the game with runners on first and third and two outs and a one-run lead. He got a grounder to third base to end the game and earn the save.
Left fielder Jordan Nwogu hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and then later scored on a wild pitch. Nwogu was 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base.
Right fielder Andy Garriola went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored on Nwogu’s double.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were bitten by the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 8-3.
Yenrri Rojas got the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over 3.2 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
All three Pelicans runs came on third baseman Cam Smith’s first professional home run, which came in the eighth inning. Smith was 1 for 3 with a walk.
