Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 23

   

Wins for Tennessee, South Bend and Myrtle Beach.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to Indianapolis (Pirates), 13-6.

Iowa starter Kyle McGowin allowed three home runs en route to giving up seven runs on nine hits over five innings. Two of those home runs were to DH Seth Beer. McGowin walked one and struck out four.

Caleb Kilian got rocked for six runs on five hits over 1.2 innings in a rehab appearance. One of those hits was Beer’s third home run of this game. Kilian walked two, hit one and struck out one.

Right fielder Owen Caissie led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, his ninth of the season. Caissie was 1 for 5.

Center fielder Alexander Canario hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. It was Canario’s 18th minor league home run this season. Canario was 2 for 4 with a walk. He drove in three runs and scored twice.

Left fielder Cole Roederer was 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored.

Moises Ballesteros had a bad day at the plate—0 for 4 with four strikeouts and a walk. It was the first time in his career he struck out four times in a game. But he did do this on defense.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies usurped the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-1.

Starter Antonio Santos kept the Barons down, allowing just one run on two hits over six innings. Santos walked two and struck out seven.

Center fielder Kevin Alcántara hit a monster solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. It was Alcántara’s ninth home run this season. He went 1 for 3 with a walk.

First baseman Jonathon Long went back-to-back with Alcántara in the first inning and then hit a second solo home run in the eighth. They were Long’s first two Double-A home runs and tenth overall. Long was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk.

Alcántara’s home run was murdered.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs demoted the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 3-2 in ten innings.

Nick Dean started and allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. Dean struck out eight and walked no one, although he did hit one batter.

Marino Santy and Mitchell Tyranski both threw two scoreless innings (both allowing just one hit) to get South Bend to extra innings.

Center fielder Brett Bateman hit a sac fly to score automatic runner Ed Howard to score the winning run. Both players were 1 for 4.

First baseman Brian Kalmer hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to account for all of South Bend’s runs in regulation. It was Kalmer’s seventh home run of the season. Kalmer was 1 for 4.

Left fielder Rafael Morel went 2 for 4 and scored on Kalmer’s home run.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans shot a 64 against the Augusta GreenJackets (Braves), 7-1.

Kenton Egbert started and kept Augusta scoreless on three hits over 3.2 innings. Egbert walked three and struck out four.

Angel Hernandez relieved Egbert and got the win with 2.1 innings of relief. He allowed one run on one hit. Hernandez walked two and struck out six.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez had a big night, going 3 for 5 with a double and four runs batted in.

Catcher Miguel Pabon also had a good game, also putting up a 3 for 5 with a double line. Pabon only drove home one run but he also scored one.

ACL Cubs

Lost to the Rockies 5-4.

Adbert Alzolay threw an inning of relief in this game in a rehab assignment. Alzolay gave up three runs on two hits, but only one of the three runs was earned. He did not walk or strike anyone out.
