Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 25

Just the Smokies ended up in the win column. The Pelicans finished in the “rain” column. The ACL finishes their season.

The Cubs acquired outfielder Gilberto Celestino from the Pirates for cash considerations. The 25-year-old from the Dominican Republic was hitting .271/.348/.356 in 67 games with Indianapolis this year. He had signed with the Pirates this past offseason as a minor-league free agent after spending the first part of his career in the Twins organization. Celestino will provide outfield depth for Iowa.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to Indianapolis (Pirates), 7-2.

Riley Thompson started and took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in just three innings. All four runs and five of the six hits came in the third inning. Thompson walked two and struck out one.

Catcher Moises Ballesteros was 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Here’s that double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defenestrated the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-1.

Chris Kachmar had a terrific start tonight, allowing just one run—and that was unearned—on one hit over six innings. Kachmar struck out three and walked no one.

Christian Franklin hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his fifth this year. Franklin was 1 for 5.

Jonathon Long doubled twice in a 2 for 4 game. He drove in one run.

Kevin Alcántara was 2 for 5 with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit.

Here’s Long’s RBI double.

Some nice defense from James Triantos.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were fired by the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 5-3.

Will Sanders gave up a three-run home run in the fourth inning, which was bad. But the rest of his night wasn’t bad as he went four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Sanders walked one and struck out five.

First baseman Brian Kalmer hit a solo home run in the second inning, his eighth this season. Kalmer was 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Third baseman Reivaj Garcia tied the game up wtih a two-run single in the seventh inning. Garcia was 2 for 4.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez was 2 for 4.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Rained out. Doubleheader on Saturday.

ACL Cubs

Losing to the Giants, 4-0 in the second inning. They are currently in a lightning delay. They’ll try to finish this one as the Giants are fighting for a playoff spot.

This is the final game of the year for the ACL Cubs. Their record is currently 30-29, awaiting the results of tonight’s game. They will not make the playoffs.
