Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 31

Cade Horton was placed on the 7-day injured list. Dan Straily was activated off the developmental list to take his place on the Iowa roster.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs broke the Louisville Bats (Reds), 6-4.

Starter Julio Teheran got his first win as an I-Cub after he allowed four runs on six hits over five innings. Teheran did strike out eight batters and walked no one.

After that, the bullpen took over. Colten Brewer, on a rehab assignment, threw two-thirds of an inning. Brewer gave up one hit and walked one batter while striking out the other two.

Ethan Roberts finished the sixth inning for Brewer and struck out the only batter he faced.

Eduarniel Nunez pitched the seventh inning. He walked two batters with one out, but then struck out the next two to end the threat.

Brad Wieck faced four batters and retired all four. He struck out three of them.

Finally, Michael Arias got the save in his Triple-A debut. He faced two batters and got both of them on ground outs to third base.

In the second inning, third baseman David Bote hit a solo home run, his seventh on the season. Bote went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

In the third inning, center fielder Cole Roederer made it 3-1 in his first Triple-A game this year with a two-run home run. Roederer went 1 for 3 with a walk.

After Iowa fell behind 4-3, second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni retook the lead with a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Mastrobuoni was 1 for 3 with a walk. He has three home runs this year.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies poked the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds) in the eye, 3-2 in ten innings.

The Smokies got a terrific start from Brandon Birdsell tonight. Birdsell allowed no runs and just two singles. He struck out three and walked no one.

Alex Troop gave up a two-run home run in the seventh inning to turn a 1-0 Smokies lead into a 2-1 deficit. Troop pitched 2.1 innings and gave up the two runs on four hits. He walked one batter and struck out one.

Blake Whitney entered the game in the top of the ninth with runners on second and third and just one out. He got out of that jam with two strikeouts and then retired the side in order in the tenth to get the win. Whitney struck out four of the five batters he faced over 1.2 innings.

Third baseman Luis Verdugo singled home automatic runner Christian Franklin in the top of the tenth with the winning run. Verdugo went 1 for 5. Franklin was 1 for 4 with a walk.

Those tenth inning heroics would never have happened if DH Yohendrick Pinango hadn’t led off the ninth inning with a single and then came around to score the tying run with two outs on a throwing error. Pinango went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Catcher Moises Ballesteros was 3 for 4 with a double. He was also intentionally walked in the tenth inning. Ballesteros scored one run.

RBI single for Pinango.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs came back with a guilty verdict against the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals), 9-3.

Drew Gray turned in a good start, allowing just one run on one hit over 4.1 innings. Gray did walk three batters while striking out five.

Koen Moreno relieved Gray in the fifth inning and got the win because Gray didn’t go five innings. Moreno retired both batters he faced on a pop up to first and a grounder to first.

Will Sanders then got the four inning save, the first save of his career. Sanders pitched four innings and surrendered two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out seven.

The Cubs jumped out to an early lead with a five-run top of the first inning. First baseman Brian Kalmer hit a three-run home run that inning, his first on the year. Kalmer went 1 for 4 with a walk.

In the fourth inning, catcher Ethan Hearn connected for a solo home run, his second. Hearn went 1 for 4.

South Bend’s third home run came off the bat of DH Jonathon Long with the bases emoty in the seventh. It was Long’s fourth home run of 2024. Long also had a two-run single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth, giving him four RBI for the game. Long was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Third baseman Ed Howard stayed hot, going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Over the past six games, Howard has raised his batting average from .156 to .231. He has 15 hits in those six games.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were bitten by the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 5-3.

Nazier Mulé made his Myrtle Beach debut in this game. Unfortunately, he took the loss after he allowed three runs on two hits over two innings. The big blow was a two-run home run in the second inning. Mulé walked four and struck out one.

Jeral Vizcaino pitched three innings of relief and the only baserunner he allowed was a hit batsman. Vizcaino struck out three.

Second baseman Alexis Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the third inning, his second on the season. Hernandez was 2 for 4.

Center fielder Alfonsin Rosario hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was Rosario’s fifth home run this year. Rosario was 2 for 4, but he also popped out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Right fielder Jacob Wetzel was 2 for 5 with a double in the ninth inning.
