South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs peeled the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 9-5.
The win went to Nico Zeglin, who pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Sanders. Zeglin allowed three hits and walked one while striking out three. Since getting promoted to South Bend, Sanders has allowed just one run over 27.2 innings.
Sam Thoreson pitched the final two innings and got his first career save. Thoreson issued a two-out walk in the ninth, which was the only baserunner he allowed. Thoreson struck out five.
Left fielder Edgar Alvarez hit a grand slam in the second inning, his first professional home run. Alvarez went 3 for 5 with a double and the grand slam.
In the ninth inning, first baseman Brian Kalmer added an insurance run with a solo home run. It was his 11th of the season. Kalmer went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored twice and drove in two.
DH Cam Smith went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI single in the fourth inning. Smith also scored once. Smith now has a 15-game hitting streak between South Bend and Myrtle Beach.
Shortstop Ed Howard went 3 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored twice.
Third baseman Pedro Ramirez was doubled twice in a 3 for 6 game. He scored one run.
There was also a play in this game where it looked like (and on replay, it was) the Cubs’ second triple play in as many games. With runners on first and second, a line drive was hit to left fielder Alvarez, who caught the ball and then dropped it on the transfer to his throwing hand. Both runners took off without tagging up and South Bend threw to second and first for the triple play. But while the umpires called a triple play originally, they reversed themselves and ruled the runner going from first to second safe. There are only two umpires in High-A and one of them admitted that he couldn’t tell if the runner on first went back to tag, so he was called safe. But replay showed that the runner going from first to second should have been called out. The next batter up singled him home to give Fort Wayne a 5-4 lead at the time.
Alvarez’s first home run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were drilled by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros), 1-0 in ten innings.
Juan Bello started and gave the Pelicans five scoreless innings and he allowed just one hit. Bello struck out four and walked one.
Luis Rujano pitched the next four innings, giving up no runs on two hits. Rujano struck out five and walked no one.
Lisandro Almonte came on to pitch the tenth inning and got the loss without officially facing a batter. The automatic runner went to third on a passed ball and then scored on a balk.
The Pelicans had just four hits, all singles. Second baseman Jose Escobar went 1 for 3 with two walks.
