Third baseman Matt Shaw went 2 for 5 with a double.

Center fielder Kevin Alcántara went 2 for 5 and scored one run.

Catcher Moises Ballesteros was 2 for 5 with an RBI single in the ninth.

His second home run went 394 feet.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies shut out the Mississippi Braves, 3-0 in game one. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed.

Sam Armstrong started and got the win after five innings and allowing just two hits. Armstrong struck out four and walked no one.

Blake Weiman threw the seventh inning and collected the save. Weiman issued a one-out walk, but allowed no other damage. Weiman did not strike anyone out.

Angel Hernandez gave up three runs on the fifth inning and got the loss. His final line was three runs on four hits over one inning. He neither walked nor struck anyone out.

Left fielder Jordan Nwogu went 1 for 3 with a walk. He scored South Bend’s only run when he stole third base and a throwing error allowed him to score.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans split a doubleheader with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros), winning game one 8-6 and dropping the second one 1-0.

Nazier Mulé started game one and gave up just one unearned run on just one hit over four innings. Mulé struck out four, walked one and hit one batter.

Luis A. Reyes got the win because Mulé didn’t go five innings. Reyes didn’t pitch well, however, going 1.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Reyes walked one and struck out one.

Fayetteville scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kenyi Perez came on to relieve Reyes in the inning and faced four batters. He walked three of them and hit one of them. Perez was then relieved by Luis Martinez-Gomez, who gave up two inherited runs with a single to the first batter he faced. But Martinez-Gomez collected the save by finishing off the sixth inning and then staying in for a scoreless seventh. The final line for Martinez-Gomez was no runs on two hits over 1.1 innings. Gomez struck out two and walked no one.

First baseman Cameron Sisneros hit a grand slam in the third inning, his second home run as a professional. Sisneros went 2 for 4.

Second baseman Jose Escobar hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, his seventh on the season and fourth in the Carolina League. Escobar went 1 for 3 and scored twice. He was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning, giving him two RBI for the game.

The Sisneros slam.

Escobar’s solo shot.

In game two, Connor Schultz threw a six-inning, complete game one-hitter. Unfortunately, the one hit was a third inning home run by Rabel Colon. Schultz walked one and struck out four.

The Birds only had three hits in game two, all singles. Center fielder Leonel Espinoza, shortstop Reginald Preciado and left fielder Carter Trice were all 1 for 3.
