After selecting collegiate outfielders in Ethan Conrad and Kane Kepley , the Chicago Cubs pivoted with their final selection on the first night of the 2025 MLB Draft. With the 90th overall pick, the Cubs selected Abilene Christian RHP Dominick Reid. Reid is the third collegiate player selected by the Cubs and first pitcher in 2025.

Reid pitched under 20 innings in two seasons at Oklahoma State, which prompted his transfer to Abilene Christian. Its safe to say the move was a good one for the righty, as he set the program record for strikeouts after fanning 112 batters in 88.1 innings of work. Reid settled in as the Friday stater for the program in 2025 and is the highest draft pick out of Abilene Christian since 1969.
In addition to the 112 punchouts, Reid owned a 3.26 ERA and just 27 walks across 15 appearances. The righty sports a really good changeup and above-average fastball, but his slider leaves some to be desired.
In order to stick in the rotation, Reid will certainly need a better breaking pitch than his slider. But, the changeup/fastball combo is already solid as he can spot both pitches well, and the Cubs will surely help him find something in the pitch lab. Perhaps a splitter to play off his changeup and a sweeper are potential additions to his repertoire in the future.
Reid marks the final pick for the Cubs on the first night of the 2025 MLB Draft. Rounds 4-20 will take place on Monday as the Cubs add more talent to their prospect pool.
