The Chicago Cubs have traded outfielder Alexander Canario to the New York Mets for cash considerations. This happened just days after they designated him for assignment. They needed to make room for veteran infielder Justin Turner.
Canario, 24, was originally acquired from the Giants in the 2021 Kris Bryant trade. Known for his raw power, he hit 37 home runs across three minor league levels in 2022. However, a serious ankle and shoulder injury in late 2022 slowed his development. He rebounded in 2023, slashing .276/.342/.524 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in just 36 games at Triple-A Iowa. In 2024 he played 64 games for Triple-A Iowa with 18 home runs, 47 RBIs and a .243 batting average. In 15 games with the Cubs he had one home run, two RBIs and hit .280 last year.
Canario showed great potential. However, he was squeezed out of the Cubs’ plans because of a crowded outfield. This outfield includes Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, and top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong. His lack of minor league options further complicated his chances of making the Opening Day roster. Kevin Alcantara and Owen Caissie are waiting in the Minors for their opportunity. Therefore, he was truly affordable to let walk.
Scouts remain intrigued by his power. However, concerns about his strikeout rate raised doubts. His in-zone contact also raised doubts about his ability to succeed in the majors. As Bleacher Nation pointed out, “We just don’t know if Canario can actually succeed in the big leagues. This is especially true when he comes off the bench.”
For the Mets, Canario represents a low-risk, high-upside addition to their outfield depth. If he can refine his approach at the plate, he could provide pop and versatility in New York.
For the Cubs, this move signals a continued focus on veterans and proven contributors. They aim to compete in 2025. While some fans hoped to see Canario get more opportunities, Chicago ultimately opted to move on.
