'Chicago P.D.' Boss Explains Why Hailey and Halstead Didn’t Return for Burzek's Wedding

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek's (Patrick John Flueger) wedding was low-key. Everything else besides the gorgeous bride and groom was relatively mundane, but that was not always the plan.

Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed that at some point, the show had considered making it a grand event and bringing back some cast members who had departed. "I think there was a moment where we were like, 'Oh my gosh, what if we could bring back everybody and have Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) show up?” she told TV Insider. However, given all that was happening in the episode, the wedding turned out to be a small affair, and it would not have been wise to have the actors appear. She explained:

"It ends up just becoming about production at the end of the day. We would’ve loved that, but to have these big actors come back for what amounts to really one scene doesn’t make sense. But we definitely thought about it. I think there’s a version of that wedding where everybody in one Chicago would’ve been there across all three shows. It would’ve been cool."

Given the ongoing cuts in the One Chicago universe, it would have been counter-productive to lasso actors in other projects for that one scene. It would have been even harder to have actors like Lee Soffer, who was filming the final season of FBI: International in Hungary. It would have been hard to have someone like Spiridakos, who recently exited for other opportunities and has a movie coming out soon. All in all, it was a perfect wedding despite having no vows. "They’re definitely not shot. We definitely didn’t shoot anything. So yeah, they’re not just hanging out for us to put out there, but who knows? You never know, I suppose, where we could take the next season," Sigan said when asked if fans will see them at some point.

Burzek Will Make 'Chicago P.D.' Season 13 Fun, Says Showrunner

"I think it’ll be really fun to write a married couple," the showrunner said when asked what was coming for Season 13 in the Burzek department. "We haven’t had a married couple on the show, really, since Halstead and Upton were married, but their marriage was very fraught. So this will feel a little bit different. And yeah, I think it’ll be a challenge, and I think it will be just an interesting dynamic to see play out at home, but also at work and sort of what they could be pushed into because they have that stability at home, kind of taking risks at work could be really fun and different," she added.
