The Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale packed an emotional punch — and now, showrunner Gwen Sigan is pulling back the curtain on everything that went down.
In a revealing post-finale interview, Sigan addressed the moment that left fans gasping: the shocking death of a beloved character. While she didn’t spoil future storylines, Sigan confirmed the decision was “painful but necessary.” She added, “It had to feel real. We wanted it to matter, to hurt — and to push the unit in a new direction.”
Then came the emotional unraveling between Voight and Chapman. Fans who’d been rooting for the unlikely pair were heartbroken to see them drift apart, but Sigan says the split was intentional. “They care about each other, deeply,” she explained. “But their moral compasses don’t align. And that tension finally broke them.”
Still, the finale wasn’t all heartbreak — there was also a wedding! After years of ups and downs, Burzek finally tied the knot. But fans quickly noticed something missing: the vows. Why skip such a pivotal moment?
“We talked about it a lot in the writers’ room,” Sigan revealed. “For Kim and Adam, their journey was the vow. Every trauma, every reunion — that’s what made them stronger. We felt like the quiet courthouse moment said everything.”
While reactions are mixed, Sigan says she stands by the choices. “This season was about emotional honesty — the raw, messy kind. And I think we delivered that.”
As fans look ahead to Season 13, one thing is clear: Chicago P.D. isn’t afraid to take bold risks — even if it breaks our hearts along the way.
