“Chicago P.D.” star Marina Squerciati on what she would've liked to see at the Burzek wedding

It only took 12 seasons (and multiple engagements), but Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) finally tied the knot.

In the season 12 finale of Chicago P.D. — after nearly delaying their nuptials yet again — the couple decided to go through with it, and moments after Voight (Jason Beghe) was somehow able to get Reid (Shawn Hatosy) off their backs, they all headed over to the church, where Burgess and Ruzek said "I do." (Or at least we assume they did, because we didn't actually hear anything they said once the ceremony began.)

Entertainment Weekly spoke with Marina Squerciati about the long-awaited moment and one thing she'd change.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you know the wedding was for sure happening this season?

MARINA SQUERCIATI: Yes. I knew it was happening this season and I had actually given birth and I was like, "Oh God, now I have to really work out to get into a fake wedding dress." I remember one time with Sophia Bush, there was a club scene and I was always in my uniform and [the script reads], "She's dressed to the nines," and I was nine months pregnant. I was so mad that the one time I got to look cute, I was nine months pregnant. Anyway, one time I would like to be in a dress when I haven't just had a baby or I'm about to give a birth to a baby.

Maybe when you guys renew your vows in five seasons.

I'm going to be snatched. [Laughs]

I did want to ask you about the dress. Did you actually get to try on multiple dresses?

Totally. Our head of wardrobe, Sue [Susan Kauffman], is so wonderful. She's like, "I want you to feel comfortable." She knows what she's doing and she guides you, but she's also there to let you help you express what you want to express about Burgess. And so we went shopping. I tried on all of these dresses. This is why Sue's important, because I'd go blingy. And she's like, "No, Burgess isn't blingy."

It does feel really understated in a very Burgess way. Honestly, I'm just happy to see them all dressed up, which is a rarity on this show. And having fun!

So Chad [Saxton], our director, was on a microphone and he was like, "Marina, smile" because we never are allowed to smile on our show. In fact, there were a couple of years when I was transitioning from the humorous beat cop to our main storyline and I would smile too much and they were like, "Stop smiling." So it's been kind of taught out of me and he's like, "No, really smile!" And I'm like, "I don't know how to do this on this show." [Laughs]

It also felt like they let Patrick have a little fun, maybe do a little improv.

Totally. He was really nervous. It was funny. So there was a man sitting where Paddy's dad should sit if it was Ruzek's dad, but Jack [Coleman] was behind us and I kept smiling at the man. I was like, I know this man. He'd smile at me, I'd smile at him, he'd smile at me and then we just keep smiling in this awkwardness. It was Paddy's actual father, but I know Paddy's father well, but Paddy didn't tell me he was coming, so it's like I didn't connect the two. I was like, "Who is this strange man?" [Laughs]

I am curious because we don't hear vows or words. Did you guys shoot any vows?

It was silent. It was just silent. You might hear me, if you were going to do the behind the scenes, I'm like, "When can I get out of these heels?" I'm not used to working in heels. I'm glad I'm not on a lawyer show.

How long did it actually take you guys to film the wedding?

Five hours. It was a long time in heels. Whenever I go to an event, I have flats right until I walk into the door. So it was a long time.

I can't decide if I was upset that I didn't hear their vows.

I was a little upset.

Were you?

Yeah. I mean, I too have been waiting for this moment. I walked myself down the aisle and I didn't do vows [in real life] because I can't, that's just letting everybody know how I feel about something. Not my vibe. But I just wish there was a little more of a party. But that's not the PD vibe.

I would've loved a reception.

Yeah, a little electric slide never hurt anybody.

Outside of the wedding, I was watching everyone's face when Voight was telling everyone about Reid. I think Burgess knows, but curious to hear your thoughts and how you wanted to play it.

I was trying to play the reality of: It's really hard to stomach that someone you love has murdered somebody. So I don't know but I suspect, and I probably don't want to look too deeply into it. I think she has questions and she may not look into them.

I was thinking about it because we know where Ruzek stands, he's a ride or die with Voight. We knew where somebody like Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) stood. But I don't quite know where Kim stands.

I've always wanted to not be Halstead because that space was inhabited and it's not who I am. I think she's not ride-or-die Ruzek but she's also not moral compass center. She has such a big world in life outside of work that she's not going to let herself be too sucked in.
