Chicago PD's latest revelation makes us feel better about Burzek's wedding plans

None of the cops on Chicago PD are millionaires. They are working people, and they risk their lives on a regular basis to make sure that Windy City civilians are safe with little to show for it. Cash is tight for Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), in particular, which is why the events of the episode "Black Ice" were such a nice change of pace.

Ruzek and Burgess are not only struggling to plan their upcoming wedding, but to provide for their daughter and Ruzek's father as well. It's not easy, and the pressure of these external circumstances can be felt whenever they are onscreen. Fortunately, Ruzek's father, Bob (Jack Coleman), made the situation a bit easier.

Ruzek's dad set up a trust fund for Makayla

As the episode drew to a close, Bob revealed that he had transferred his savings from a Florida bank account to a trust fund account for Ruzek's daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams). He struggles with Alzheimer's, but he understood the burden that Ruzek and Burgess took on when he moved in with them, and wanted to show his gratitude.

By putting his earnings in Makayla's name, Bob Ruzek made Makayla's eventual college plans a lot more realistic. In doing so, he also made it more feasible for Ruzek and Burgess to plan and enjoy a wedding. Something they briefly considered ditching in favor of an elopement earlier in season 12. Now, the duo can enjoy their wedding, and give us what we've been wanting for several years: a legit, celebratory, Chicago PD ceremony.

Both Ruzek and his dad have had gambling issues

Financial struggles run in the family. Both Bob and Ruzek are prone to gambling, with the former getting in so deep, in fact, that he was kidnapped over an unpaid $80,000 in debts. Ruzek dabbled in poker, as evidenced by his willingness to participate in an illegal game when he was off the clock. We are glad for Ruzek's sake that he's since reformed and refocused his life on his child and wife to be.

It is worth noting, however, that the money Bob set up for Makayla may not be come from the most legitimate sources. In the season 8 episode, "The Radical Truth," it's revealed that Bob, a former cop, had been taking drug money for years as a means of financing his gambling. We've no clue how much Bob spent of this drug money, but worse case scenario, at least this money will be repurposed for a more positive cause!
