Chicago P.D. season 12 introduced Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), a complex character whom Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) has been keeping his eye on.
Voight is used to doing what he wants and being in charge, and even if he didn't think Reid was making trouble, he might not have the easiest time adjusting to a new hire. However, since Reid has been a secretive and vague character from the start, Voight has had an even more challenging experience.
Chicago P.D. season 12, episode 20, "Black Ice," gave Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) his own case, and now, with one episode to go before the finale, Reid and Voight have an epic confrontation. So, how can fans watch Chicago P.D. season 12, episode 21, and what's going to happen between these two determined and tough characters?
How To Watch Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 21, "Open Casket"
The official description for the episode reads:
"The showdown with Deputy Chief Reid intensifies when Intelligence narrows in on Otero."
Hank Voight has been unsure about Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy) all season long, and now it sounds like the two characters will finally confront one another. Like Voight, viewers thought Reid had been keeping several secrets. While it wasn't a huge surprise to learn Reid has been helping a dealer named Jesus Otero (Juan Javier Cárdenas), it was still impactful since it proved Voight should always trust his instincts.
It will also be fascinating to see Voight trying to get to the bottom of who Reid is. Although several great police dramas like Chicago P.D. have harrowing cases in every episode, they also have storylines that focus on the challenging relationships between officers and detectives. It's been compelling seeing Voight figure out how to handle the new hire while still doing his challenging job. Reid is one of the best new additions to Chicago P.D., which has always been celebrated for its well-written characters.
"here’s a guy who is dangerous and he could hurt Voight, but he could also hurt his team, which is kind of not something he’s willing to compromise on. Voight would definitely go to the mattresses: You try to hurt my people, then it’s a whole other, there’s no governor left. We’re getting into that area."
While Voight might be tougher and less chatty than the mostly good-natured doctors and nurses on another One Chicago show, Chicago Med, these characters share a sense of duty and responsibility. They also want to help as many people as possible. Even though he might not say this is the case, Voight likes to protect his fellow Intelligence Unit officers, which is why he was a mentor figure to past characters like Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).
Beghe added that Voight and Reid have similar strong-willed and hardened personalities, which makes the idea of a huge battle between them even more intriguing. He said:
"But the thing that’s interesting is that I think what’s implied, even though we don’t have the same kind of history, that Reid is the same."
Shawn Hatosy Joined Chicago P.D. Season 12 As Deputy Chief Charlie Reid
When Hatosy joined Chicago P.D. in season 12, he was cast as Charlie Reid, a mysterious character whom Hank Voight can't stand. In an interview with TV Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan mentioned Reid's compelling nature and asked:
"So who is this guy that likes to keep things a little close to the vest?”
Chicago P.D. has excelled at dynamic characters who feel real, from Kim Burgess's (Marina Squerciati) sister Nicole Silver (Jules Willcox) to Reid. It sounds like the next episode of Chicago P.D. season 12 will finally feature a big confrontation between Voight and Reid, and chances are that storyline will continue into the season 12 finale, too.
