Chicago PD Season 12 Finale: A Wedding, A Death And A Shocking Revelation

The Chicago PD season 12 finale ended with the death of a major character and some shocking revelations about Hank Voight.

Chicago PD fans had high expectations from the 12 finale. Now, after the episode has aired, many are still reeling from the shocking death of a character. The episode, titled Vows, was supposed to culminate in the long-awaited wedding of Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).

What viewers got was so much more. The Chicago PD season 12 finale left everyone shocked with the demise of Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy). Reid and his rivalry with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was one of the show’s long-running storylines.

Chicago PD Season 12 Finale Explained

Reid received the Intelligence Unit suspended for “misconduct" and tried to destroy their careers. While the team was outside the court before a disciplinary hearing, Reid was killed by drug dealer Jesus Otero’s son, Renny. Earlier, Reid’s hitman had murdered Otero. Renny killed Reid in order to avenge his father’s death. As he lay dying, Reid told Voight, “You’re worse than me."

The unit was saved, Torres and Burgess got their jobs back and the streets of Chicago were safer. Burgess tied the knot with Ruzek. But not everything ended happily ever after.

Nina Chapman later confronted Voight and claimed he had “sanctioned Reid’s death" through his actions. “You released Renny. You told him how his dad died, how he suffered," Chapman said.

When Voight did not deny this, Chapman ended their developing relationship, claiming the sergeant was comparable to Reid.

Who Was Charlie Reid?

Reid was a corrupt cop who worked with some of Chicago’s deadliest criminals. He even attempted to recruit Voight in his scheme to control the city’s streets. He used Torres’ (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) illegal relationship with Gloria Perez, a confidential informant, to bring Voight over to his side. Reid’s plan to dismantle the Intelligence Unit almost worked before Voight foiled it. The two remained enemies till Reid’s demise.

Chicago PD will return with a new season in the fall. The showrunner, Gwen Sigan, has teased hints about what fans can expect next. In a chat with TV Guide, Sigan talked about Chapman and Voight’s relationship.

“I think it’s really interesting because they’re working together. She’s not going to leave Chicago because of this guy, there’s no way. So that will be very interesting. I don’t think he’s realized how much he has relied on her professionally, which has been a lot. And so, what that will look like is something we want to explore," she said.
