Samuel Girard has been incredibly consistent for the Colorado Avalanche, but now it appears as though his name has surfaced in trade discussions.
The Colorado Avalanche may have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2025, but it's safe to say that after their first-round exit against the Dallas Stars, they massively underwhelmed overall this past season.
After shaking the team up with the shocking Mikko Rantanen deal, the team appear ready to make some more changes, as whispers have already begun this summer over a potential trade for both Charlie Coyle and Martin Necas, two newcomers to the team from 2024/25.
Now, speculation continues over this team, as Frank Seravalli reveals chatter around star defenseman Samuel Girard, who could become available this summer if the Avalanche do indeed look to shake things up even more.
The 27-year old debuted with the Nashville Predators in 2017/18, but ended that campaign with the Colorado Avalanche, being a key member of their blue line ever since, even if his efforts often go overshadowed by the likes of Cale Makar and Devon Toews.
Between 2019 and 2023, Girard had over 30 points in a season three times, and while he's managed just 40 combined over the past two seasons battling injury, he's remained a solid piece for the Avs defensive group, posting a +7 differential in that time.
It's unclear exactly how Colorado will play this, as they could potentially be shopping him or simply listening to offers as they could be on both Necas and Coyle, but after moving Rantanen during the regular season only for him to be traded to Dallas later in the season, anything could happen.
Right now, Girard has just two years remaining on his current deal with a salary cap hit of $5 million a season, and given that fantastic value, if the team decide to potentially package him with some other pieces, they could look to land a star in return.
