Colts GM Drops Bombshell Announcement on QB1 Role for 2025 Season

On Tuesday ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine, Ballard spoke with reporters and double-downed on his plans for the future of the Colts.

Ballard announced plans to introduce an open competition for the starting quarterback position for the 2025 season.

This decision aims to challenge third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, who has faced inconsistencies and injuries since being drafted fourth overall in 2023.

He emphasized the importance of fostering genuine competition to elevate team performance.

"It's got to be the right guy to create real competition," Ballard said. "I think it's good for the team. I think it's good for Anthony."

Richardson's tenure with the Colts has been marked by challenges. In 2024, he participated in 11 games, recording 1,814 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The team achieved a 6-5 record with him as the starter. Notably, Richardson requested to be taken out of a game due to fatigue, leading to veteran Joe Flacco stepping in.

To enhance the quarterback room the Colts are exploring various avenues, including free agency, trades, and the upcoming NFL Draft. Potential candidates to compete with Richardson include players like Justin Fields, Mac Jones, Jameis Winston and Sam Darnold.

The NFL's new league year commences on March 12 at 4:00 p.m., at which point the Colts are expected to reveal their strategy for the quarterback competition.
