Over the weekend, the prestigious show Saturday Night Live celebrated its 50th anniversary.
This led to star cast members and famous hosts from the show's storied history showing up to support the event, one of whom was Indianapolis Colts legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.
Peyton Manning showed up to support Saturday Night Live during their 50th anniversary special
Peyton Manning hosted SNL in March of 2007, which came after the Colts Super Bowl 41 victory over the Chicago Bears. This came during the show's 32nd season. Manning joined a long list of famous athletes to be given the honor of hosting SNL with the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, and Peyton's rival on the field and good friend Tom Brady.
Though there's a long list of professional athletes to host SNL during the show's 50 seasons since Manning's episode aired in 2003, only three more NFL players have been given the honor. One is his brother Eli Manning (2012), and the others being J.J. Watt (2020) and Travis Kelce (2023). The most memorable skit that I'm sure anyone who has watched Peyton's episode still remembers to this day involves the Colts quarterback playing football with a group of kids.
On top of attending the 50th anniversary show, Manning was able to reflect on his experience hosting Saturday Night Live 18 years ago. Here is what the former Colts QB had to say:
"For a football player to be able to take their helmet off and show they can laugh, they're not afraid to make fun of themselves, they don't take themselves too seriously. I was with an all-star cast that year in 2007: Sudeikis, Poehler, Rudolph, Wiig, the list goes on and on, Samberg. I laughed all week, and it was fascinating to go behind the ropes in someone else's arena. You don't get to do that in football, you don't get to have a 12th person in the huddle to really see what its like. But I got to go behind the ropes and creating the sketches and the rehearsals. It's a lot like a football game week, and it's a live event, which I can relate to."
