To say making an NFL roster is difficult would be an understatement, but it is truly an uphill battle for undrafted free agents or UDFAs.
The Colts signed multiple UDFAs following the 2025 NFL Draft, but in all honesty, most seem to be entering training camp with their most likely role being on the practice squad. Thanks to the team's lack of talent at certain parts of their roster, though, a few UDFAs feel more confident about their chances. One that stands out ahead of training camp is defensive back Trey Washington, who could potentially compete for a roster spot at two different positions.
Trey Washington is currently listed at safety, which is the position he played the most snaps at during his four-year career at Ole Miss, but it feels like the more accurate label for him would simply be defensive back. He spent time at both safety positions, along with logging significant snaps as a slot corner throughout college. Both positions fit well for the Colts roster due to the fact that their depth is lacking in those areas.
Neither reserve safety job is set in stone, so Washington would be competing with players like seventh round pick Hunter Wohler , Rodney Thomas, and Daniel Scott. And behind Kenny Moore II, the Colts don't have a clear backup slot corner. Watching his film, I think Washington's best fit at the pro level would be as a slot corner or as a hybrid safety who is able to use his coverage skills to help a defense. The area that could hurt his chances of making the roster, however, is his lack of special teams experience.
Typically, you'd want your reserve defensive backs to play a role on special teams, especially with the Colts' thin LB room likely calling for typical special teamers to have a larger role on defense than they should. Although you might not hear his name as often as other intriguing young players, when training camp kicks off, I think it would be wise to remember the name Trey Washington. He has a real shot to position himself well to make the team's roster, and in turn prove the rest of the NFL wrong for passing on him in the 2025 NFL Draft.
