The Washington Commanders have some key players on the roster that they will have to make decisions about before the 2024 season. With OTAs underway, the Commanders are looking to build a new culture with Dan Quinn as the head coach and Adam Peters as the new general manager.

Washington finished with a 4-13 record last season and they also went 0-6 in NFC East play. The Washington Commanders finished with the second-worst record in the NFL. Because of it, Washington selected quarterback Jayden Daniels from LSU with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders Should Either Restructure, Extend, or Trade Jonathan Allen Before the 2024 NFL Regular Season

Allen is 29 years old and was the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Jonathan Allen has been a part of the Washington Commanders franchise throughout his NFL career. Last season with the Commanders, he recorded 53 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and one pass deflection.
According to Spotrac, Jonathan Allen will become a free agent for the Washington Commanders after the 2025 season. Bleacher Report Scouting Department thinks that the Commanders should either restructure, trade, or extend Jonathan Allen before the 2024 season.
They said:
“Restructuring Jonathan Allen’s contract, which has a base salary of $14 million, could also create some space.
Extending Allen, who is signed through 2025, is yet another option. And with second-round pick Jer’Zhan Newton in the fold, the Commanders could consider moving Allen or fellow defensive tackle Daron Payne.”
It might be the best move for the Washington Commanders to not do anything with him this year. They should not do any of those three options. If they were to extend him now and if Jonathan Allen got hurt at some point this season for the Commanders, it would not be a good look for the organization. The best option for Washington would be to wait until after the 2024 season to either trade or extend him.
This would tell where the Washington Commanders are after the first season of the Quinn and Peters regime. The most likely option might be to trade Jonathan Allen after next season because he will only have one year remaining on his contract.

He would be more likely to be expendable if second-round pick Jer’Zhan Newton makes an impact right away as a rookie. He was the 36th overall selection (second-round pick) in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Illinois. The Washington Commanders will have a lot to figure out with Jonathan Allen over the next year or two.
