The NFL world has been watching the Trey Hendrickson situation in Cincinnati unfold, and on Monday, they got another update.
A 2X First-team All-Pro, Hendrickson has been open about his desire for a new contract extension. He watched as the team doled out money to wide receivers Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins, and now believes he is next in line for a big pay day. Unfortunately for Bengals fans, the team seems to have different ideas based on the state Hendrickson put out on Monday.
While things are far from settled, it does seem that things could be trending towards Hendrickson either holding out until he gets a new extension, or until the Bengals finally decide to trade him. If that latter scenario is the one that plays out, could the Colts make a huge splash, and bring Hendrickson in?
During the Monday edition of The Ride With JMV, Stephen Holder of ESPN joined the show, and discussed some of that factors that would be at play if the Colts tried to make that move.
“We don’t know about the Bengals willingness to deal him; we still don’t know about that. We also don’t know whether the Colts can accommodate the salary…Are the Bengals willing to work to get a resolution to maybe get him somewhere else if he does indeed want to move…Originally, in terms of what they were messaging to the rest of the league, it wasn’t going to work for most teams. A 1st-round pick is a non-starter, no one’s going to do it…No one’s doing a 1st-round pick for a 32 [year old defensive end] …The second issue is also a big one. The salary cap has gotten tighter…they have room, but not that kind of room to comfortably accommodate that salary, whatever that salary would end up being because he’s going to want an extension. So, that would require other moves.”
