Critics Break Down the Top 10 Soap Moments—Which Ones Really Delivered?

Soap Hub looks at the Hits and Misses for the week of February 24-28 in the worlds of Days of Our LivesGeneral Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful,, The Young and the Restless, and Beyond the Gates.

10. HIT: Audra tells the “truth” (Y&R). We thought Audra’s secret that she knew Holden (Nathan Owens) from her Los Angeles days would have lasted longer than it did. Sure, there must be a whole lot that Audra (Zuleyka Silver) hasn’t told Nate (Sean Dominic). What’s important here for the moment is that she fessed up about her connection to Holden instead of keeping a lid on this bit of intel. This way, Audra shows character development but still has that shady side to her. Win. Win.

9. MISS: Hayley’s delusion (BTG). What’s going on with Hayley (Marquita Goings)? How in the world does she think she can marry Bill (Timon Durrett), move into Fairmont Crest, and ask for Dani’s acceptance? How did she get so deluded and demanding? The problem is she keeps asking as if she’s entitled to it. But she needs to know she’s not about to be accepted by everyone beyond the FC gates, which is literally Dupree territory. Dani (Karla Mosley) owes Hayley nothing and nada. Who knows, acceptance may come down the road, but Hayley will need to be patient.

8. HIT: Cat and Chad (DAYS). This may be an unpopular opinion, but Billy Flynn and AnnaLynne McCord have some serious chemistry going on. We saw the sparks when Cat and Chad worked together brainstorming ideas for the hospital fundraiser. And now we’re excited to see how these two develop.

7. MISS: Drew lies about being Jason’s alibi (GH). Of course, Drew (Cameron Mathison) was going to lie and say he never saw Jason the night Cyrus (Jeff Kober) was killed. But to what end? We bet the alibi could be busted fairly easily. In addition, Willow immediately believed Drew’s story even though everybody in town says Jason isn’t a liar. Unless he’s pretending to be someone’s baby daddy, that is.

6. MISS: Daphne and Carter Kiss (B&B). We had high hopes that Daphne (Murielle Hilaire) could talk Carter into giving back Forrester Creations without Carter giving into Daphne’s scent and seductive scheme. We like the effect she’s having on Carter’s conscience. Not so much on the whole romantic front. So far, it’s just a kiss. We’ll keep our eyes on how this storyline evolves.

5. HIT: Dani’s family stands strong for her against Hayley (BTG). More Dani versus Hayley drama. It’s great how Dani doesn’t shy away from confrontations and painful conversations. She’s slightly unhinged, and more importantly, she’s pissed off. At the very end of BTG’s debut episode, she walloped Hayley so fiercely that she left a mark. And then she walked away. But it’s what her family did that, to us, set the tone for the show. They have issues with how Dani acts and her inability to let go of her anger. But when it counted, they had her back. They all stepped up to Hayley, then followed Dani out. It was an iconic exit for the whole Dupree family.

4. MISS: CPS gets in the way of any sort of Kristen and EJ comeuppance (DAYS). EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) and especially Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) have a way to skirt the long arm of the law. While neither of them instigated Ava’s kidnapping, they both knew about it and, in fact, left her at Aremid tied to the vintage wheelchair. Yet, Kristen was able to tell Brady (Eric Martsolf) that he needed to talk Ava (Tamara Braun) out of pressing charges and play the Child Protective Services card. There’s no way any DiMera will go down for this. Boo.

3. HIT: Elizabeth plants a kiss on Jonathan Jackson’s Lucky. Normally, this moment wouldn’t have ranked as high as it does. However, considering the letdown of the LL2 kiss that happened last week, it was great to see Liz (Rebecca Herbst) run into Lucky’s hospital room and give him a kiss.

2. HIT: Finn tells Steffy the truth about fathering Luna (B&B). First, Tanner Novlan showed every bit of the fear Finn felt for having to tell Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) that the woman who caged her and almost killed her, and who also killed two men, was his daughter. It was such a big moment that the show played up just right. Plus, we happened to be watching Iive that day, and the episode ended with Steffy’s immediate and horrified reaction to Finn’s news. The music was hella dramatic, and then suddenly, the huge cliffhanger led into the debut episode of Beyond the Gates. B&B gave BTG a strong lead-in, and it gave us chills. Such a class act.

1. HIT and MISS: Sharon and Phyllis (Y&R). It’s great that Sharon (Sharon Case) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) are finally hashing out their rocky AF relationship. But doing it via this mystery kidnapping situation is just too soon after Jordan, Ian, and the PCP-laced pills wreaked havoc. The two have been at odds so many times over the last few months that this bottle situation they have going on, where they are cooped up in one room and forced to deal with each other, is just too soon. It would have been nice if this came months down the road.

Honorable Mentions

BTG

HIT: Giving flowers to BTG’s behind-the-scenes crew. The sets are gorgeous, and the lighting is on point. So is the new soap’s fashion, hair, makeup, and music. Starting the entire series off with The Emotions’ “Best of My Love” was genius and thoroughly appreciated. Bravo to the different departments who came together to create BTG.
HIT and MISS: Bill destroys Dani. In Friday’s episode, Dani tried one more time to get her life back. She went to Bill and told him she wanted him back and that he needed to cancel his wedding. Then Bill proceeded to destroy Dani with his words. He told her she was desperate and asked what happened to all of her pride. On one hand, it was a great scene filled with palpable tension and rich history. On the other hand, the casual way Bill treated Dani’s pain all week was so cruel.

B&B

MISS: Hope is the only one hyped for anything at the new Forrester Creations. Hope (Annika Noelle) is not getting a good edit right now. Everybody seems to keep noting how Hope was the only one to be excited about the new Forrester Creations’ success. She can’t even talk to her mom. Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) is too busy trying to figure out the next time she can approach Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) about getting him back. Hope has nobody, not even Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor), whose conscience has suddenly made a comeback. It’s sad. She needs an ally.
HIT: Remy (Christian Weissmann) and Luna (Lisa Yamada). It was a pretty contrived way they met each other at Bill’s house, but we’re here for a friendship. The two could cause serious drama in the future. But, for now, it’s refreshing to see Luna talk to someone other than Bill.

DAYS

HIT: Shawn and Jada. We’re not sure whether we want to see Shawn (Brandon Beemer) and Jada (Elia Cantu) continue their sparkly connection. After all, Rafe is going through such a rough time right now. But we’re going to enjoy them for as long as they last.
MISS: It looks like Rafe has complete amnesia. Rafe was freed after EJ injected him with Rolf’s (Richard Wharton) memory-erasing drug. And now everybody will think he’s Arnold when he’s the real deal, Rafe. While we’ve enjoyed Galen Gering and his dual roles, Rafe has been through so much lately, and we were hoping the story had come to a conclusion. Nope, it will be going on for the foreseeable future.

GH

HIT: Ric doesn’t let Kristina get away with her “my daughter” spiel. Things got a bit volatile when Ava (Maura West) sauntered over to Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Kristina’s table to casually talk about Avery. When Kristina (Kate Mansi) lit into Ava and called her a conniving you-know-what, Ric (Rick Hearst) let loose with the facts. Kristina was the one to bulldoze into Ava’s that awful night. And it’s not “my daughter”. The baby that she lost was supposed to be Molly’s (Kristen Vaganos). That was the agreement. Ric’s unleashing was fairly satisfying.
MISS: Willow agrees to move in with Drew. How is this already happening? We thought Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) would hold out longer before agreeing to move in with Drew. Can Nina (Cynthia Watros) now let it slip that she and Drew had a thing going on? Pretty please, Nina?

YR

HIT: Lily’s the boss during dinner with Damian. Right now, Lily (Christel Khalil) isn’t letting Damian (Jermaine Rivers) get away with much. She’s encouraging him to reveal more about herself. But at the same time, she’s trying to keep her guard up with him. It’s enjoyable.
MISS: Adam and Chelsea rehashing that night in Baltimore. There are certain topics that have been talked about incessantly and overanalyzed. When this became a topic of conversation at Adam’s (Mark Grossman) and Chelsea’s (Melissa Claire Egan) romantic dinner, we were hoping for something to happen that would immediately cause a distraction or change the conversation.
