After months of speculation, it appears that Pittsburgh Penguins' captain, Sidney Crosby, is on the verge of signing an extension with the only NHL team he's ever played for.

Since being the top pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Crosby has worn a Penguins sweater and accumulated an estimated salary of $141,340,243.

According to CapFriendly, the native of Cole Harbour, N.S., has signed three contracts throughout his 20 seasons:

  • Sep. 5, 2005 - a three-year entry-level deal worth $11 million
  • July 7, 2007 - a five-year deal worth $43.5 million
  • July 1, 2012 - a 12-year deal worth $104.4 million

For the past 12 seasons, Crosby has had a cap hit and annual average salary of $8.7 million.

When he inks his third extension with the Penguins, his new earnings totals will keep him at the top of the career earnings charts, ahead of long-time rival Alex Ovechkin ($138.2 million).

Here is a breakdown of the NHL's top career earners:

  1. Sidney Crosby - $141+ million
  2. Alex Ovechkin - $138+ million
  3. Shea Weber - $129+ million
  4. Jaromir Jagr - $128+ million
