The Chicago Cubs are getting ready to kick off a two-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. As they get ready to hopefully continue their recent success against the NL West's most-feared team, the roster required a slight shakeup. Following a pair of rough appearances against the Arizona Diamondbacks over this past weekend, LHP Jordan Wicks is returning to Triple-A Iowa. In his place, the Cubs have called up RHP Gavin Hollowell.
Hollowell is not a stranger to the major leagues. The righty pitched two stints with the Colorado Rockies in 2022 and 2023, pitching to a 6.20 ERA in that span. In 2024, Hollowell had a cup of coffee with the Cubs, pitching 1.1 innings at the end of the season. The 27-year-old was originally acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks off waivers by the Cubs in 2024.
Hollowell's 2025 numbers surely won't blow anyone away, as the righty owns a 4.26 ERA across five appearances with the Iowa Cubs. However, Hollowell has pitched 6.1 innings in that frame, striking out 10 batters. Perhaps a little extra length in the bullpen via Hollowell is what the Cubs need.
Although Wicks is being sent back down, the organization certainly isn't giving up on their former first-round pick. Wicks has juggled between starter and reliever in 2025, potentially making for some discomfort in the role. A clearer path for his immediate future should help the left-hander settle in and potentially return to the majors at some point this season.
The Cubs and Dodgers begin their two-game set at 6:40 p.m. CT with Shota Imanaga dueling Dustin May for their respective sides.
