Cubs roster move: Jorge López to injured list, Trey Wingenter recalled

The Cubs righthander will miss a couple weeks.

Jorge López didn’t pitch much on the recent road trip due to a groin injury. He came back and threw a scoreless inning Saturday, then got lit up by the Pirates with a pair of home runs Monday.

Today, the Cubs placed López on the 15-day injured list due to that right groin strain (retroactive to Tuesday) and recalled righthander Trey Wingenter from Triple-A Iowa.

López has a 2.19 ERA and 1.176 WHIP in 22 games since the Cubs signed him June 11 following his release by the Mets. He has 28 strikeouts and eight walks allowed in 24⅔ innings. Hopefully this injury is nothing serious and he’ll be back soon.

Wingenter was the Padres’ 17th round pick out of Auburn in 2015. He pitched in 73 games for the Padres in 2018 and 2019 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.229 WHIP. After that he bounced from the Reds organization to the Tigers. He pitched in 17 games in relief for Detroit in 2023 with a 5.82 ERA and 1.353 WHIP, then was traded to the Red Sox in July. He appeared in two games for Boston and the Cubs claimed him on waivers Aug. 2. He has made eight relief appearances for Triple-A Iowa with a 2.79 ERA and 0.828 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 9⅔ innings.

One thing is for sure — you won’t miss Wingenter if you see him, he’s six-foot-seven. He was spotted earlier this afternoon arriving at Wrigley Field:
