The Chicago Cubs are continuing to add to major league camp with spring training on the horizon. This time, they turn to 29-year-old catcher Reese McGuire. It's another low-risk move, and the team would be pleasantly surprised if it works out.
McGuire joins Carson Kelly and Carlos Perez as the newest catching additions to the organization this offseason. The team is surely looking for improvement after a revolving door of production during the 2024 season.
Miguel Amaya will face some competition this spring if he hopes to remain on the major league roster. No one in that position should feel comfortable.
Prior to joining the Cubs, McGuire spent time with the Boston Red Sox from 2022 to 2024. He comes well-traveled since making his debut in 2018 as a member of the Blue Jays and White Sox. The team will lean on his veteran presence as they get an up-close look at some of their young pitchers this spring.
McGuire joins a recent string of Cubs catchers who leave much to be desired with the bat. Since the departure of Willson Contreras, the team has made a significant change in how they address the position.
As the days pass, the team still needs to address the elephant in the room to cap off a solid off-season. A closer would go a long way in shoring up a big problem that's taken multiple seasons to solve.
With options beginning to dwindle, it's on the Cubs to be proactive in securing at least one of the arms remaining in free agency.
