The Chicago Cubs won their series opener against the San Francisco Giants by a score of 9-2 in a jam-packed Wrigley Field on Monday night. They’ve now won the opener at Wrigley a record six times in a row this season. There are more and more indications that, despite the unfortunate injuries, the Cubs are not slowing down anytime soon.
Those injuries have struck down the heart of the rotation. Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele are the Cubs’ most prominent starting pitchers in the rotation. Imanaga has now been sidelined on the 15-day IL with a hamstring injury, though he was reported to be in good spirits afterwards. The Cubs called up the 6’7″ stone hurling Hill Giant Gavin Hollowell. He did not disappoint.
Matthew Boyd was the starting pitcher for Cubs going in. He got another Quality Start and only coughed up a couple of runs. He’s been as important as anyone for the team, holding down a respectable 2.75 ERA on the season.
Ian Happ started things off with a home run to go up 2-0. The Giants followed suit with a two-run shot of their own to tie it up.
Dansby Slumpson No Longer
The Cubs played Small Ball in the fourth inning. An error got Pete Crow-Armstrong on base, though it seemed he would have made it safely anyway. Then a single by Nico Hoerner sent PCA to third. Nico stole second. Dansby got another single and both runs scored. He went 3-for-4 on the day. We’re calling it. The slump is officially over.
The sixth inning was where the Cubs decided to pour it on. They scored five more runs and the inning took 21 minutes to get over with. Seiya Suzuki slapped in a couple of RBIs. The pure excitement of the inning left room for a bit of stat padding as it seemed the Cubs were primed to score even more runs, and it didn’t materialize.
The Cubs are now 18-2 when they score five or more runs in a game. They will meet the Giants again on Tuesday at 6:40 PM.
