While Alex was at the pub, Kate accepted his job offer. “What changed your mind?” Alex asked. Kate explained that Philip’s near-death experience had reminded her of Victor. “Titan was Victor’s baby, and I want to do right by that,” Kate said. Kate added that Titan was Philip’s legacy, and she wanted to preserve it for her son. Kate told Alex that her top priority was to publish “One Stormy Night.”

Stephanie was reading through Kate’s notes on her novel in her living room when Jada asked her about it. Stephanie reluctantly told Jada about her book and what had happened with Kate. Jada pointed out that if Kate loved the book, Stephanie should publish it. Stephanie admitted she was afraid.

At the hospital, EJ visited Kayla in her office to threaten a lawsuit. Kayla refused to call off the revote because the hospital would be sued either way. “You should have your answer later today,” Kayla said. Kayla handed EJ a list of requested changes to his budget, and she noted that EJ still needed to keep her vote. “What is this, extortion?” EJ asked. “Think of it as an election,” Kayla said. Kayla advised EJ to keep her and the other board members happy.

Johnny met up with Rafe in the park. “You know how important you are to me, and if you’re ever in trouble, you know that you can tell me anything,” Rafe said. Confused, Johnny asked what was wrong. “I’m not accusing you of anything, but I need to know. Were you in an argument with EJ the night he was shot?” Rafe asked. Johnny stressed that he had not shot EJ. “That’s good to hear, but that’s not what I asked,” Rafe said. Johnny inadvertently confirmed there had been an argument.

“Even if I did argue with him that night, whoever told you that they witnessed it must have been at the house too, which means they also could have shot my dad,” Johnny argued. Rafe asked Johnny to trust him. Johnny noted that although Rafe was family, he was also law enforcement. “Either way, I feel compelled to go to the police with what I know. But I want to do it with your cooperation and with the whole story,” Rafe said. Rafe asked Johnny to let him help.

After Jada had read through a few chapters of Stephanie’s book, Rafe called her and asked to meet at the station to talk off the record about new information in the DiMera shooting case. Jada went to the station and met up with Rafe in the interrogation room. Rafe told Jada about Gabi’s story and Johnny’s possible involvement.

“Johnny wants to go on the record. He just needs to know that he has a safe path moving forward and that he’s going to be treated fairly,” Rafe said. After Rafe told Jada all that he knew, she registered her annoyance that he had kept evidence secret. Rafe stressed that he believed Johnny was innocent and that if Jada worked with him, Johnny could help her solve the case. Jada promised to keep an open mind, but she needed to interrogate Johnny. Jada called Belle for advice.

EJ was walking through the town square and talking to a hospital board member on the phone when he spotted Johnny. After EJ ended his call, he asked Johnny what was wrong. Johnny told EJ about his conversation with Rafe. EJ argued that Rafe could not be trusted, and Johnny should let EJ protect him instead. “No one ever has to know that you shot me,” EJ whispered. “What are you talking about? I didn’t shoot you,” Johnny said. EJ was stunned.

“I thought you said you remembered,” Johnny said. With tears in his eyes, EJ admitted that his last memory was that Johnny had confronted him with the gun. “I just assumed,” EJ said. Johnny informed EJ that EJ had convinced him to hand over the gun. “You gave me the gun?” EJ stammered. Johnny said he had left after that because he had been ashamed of his actions. “You thought you were protecting me from being charged with attempted murder this whole time?” Johnny asked. EJ hugged Johnny tightly as he cried with relief.

“After what I did, how can you still stand by me?” Johnny asked. EJ told Johnny that he was his son and he loved him. “Because you forgave me for my terrible misdeeds. And I will always be grateful for that,” EJ said. Johnny told EJ that he loved him, too. After a moment, EJ wondered aloud who had shot him.

Alex went to Stephanie’s place, and he told her that Kate had accepted the editor job at Titan. Alex asked Stephanie if she would let Titan publish her book. “If you can promise me that no one will ever find out that I wrote it, then yes, we have a deal. You can publish it,” Stephanie said.

Cat was cooking in her kitchen when Shane called her and asked to meet with a contact. “Yes, I’m aware of what I signed up for,” Cat said. Chad knocked on the front door. When Cat noted that flowers were not necessary, Chad explained that he had brought them for Felicity. While the dinner finished cooking, Chad asked Cat if she needed any financial support. Cat thanked Chad for his generosity, but she declined assistance.

Cat went into the kitchen to check on dinner, and she pretended that she had received a message on her phone. Cat told Chad that Felicity had taken a bad fall at the gym. Chad offered to drive Cat to the gym, but Cat declined. Cat asked if they could reschedule dinner. Chad offered to clean up and sample the dinner while Cat went to get Felicity.

Cat went to the park to meet with her contact. Rafe approached. “I’m Rafe Hernandez. Your new partner,” Rafe said as he shook Cat’s hand. Rafe apologized for having been late. “The ISA director said that we were going to be working together on a new interagency task force,” Cat said. Rafe explained that he needed help proving that EJ had committed a financial crime to pull together the money to buy the hospital.

Xander delivered a bouquet of flowers to Philip in the hospital. “Don’t you think that’s a little insincere?” Philip asked. “I told you I feel horrible about what happened,” Xander said. When Xander noted he had not been thinking clearly at the hotel, Philip asked about Xander’s state of mind when he had attempted to smother him with a pillow in the hospital. Philip told Xander that he did not feel safe around him, and he picked up the call button.

“You think I’m going to let you get away with trying to kill me again?” Philip said. “I’m not trying to kill you, Philip!” Xander protested. Philip remained suspicious. With a sigh, Xander admitted, “I did get rid of the guard that day. I couldn’t let you tell anyone what I’d done.” Xander added that he had been unable to go through with smothering Philip.

“What you saw when you woke up that day was me wrestling with my conscience, hating myself for what I’d been tempted to do,” Xander said. “And I’m supposed to believe you had a change of heart? It’s not like you haven’t tried to kill people before,” Philip countered. Xander argued that if he had truly wanted to kill Philip, he would have killed him. As Xander started to talk about his shame, Kayla walked into the room. Philip lied and said he had wanted to ask the nurse about his release. Kayla told Philip that he would be released in the morning.

“Are you sure everything’s okay in here?” Kayla asked as she looked over at Xander. “All good,” Philip said. Xander explained that they had been talking about business. With a hesitant nod, Kayla walked out. “So does that mean you believe me that I tried to stop myself?” Xander asked. “What I believe is that if you wanted to kill me, you would have done it even after I woke up,” Philip said. Philip added that Xander still had the instinct to kill him. When Philip argued that Xander owed him, Xander reminded Philip that they both had a lot to lose.

“Fraud and attempted murder are not the same thing. Plus, I don’t have a wife and kid. So let’s be clear, if you do anything like this to me or anyone else again, I will put you away. No matter what it costs me. Do you understand?” Philip said. Xander nodded yes. Philip warned Xander that he needed to fix the situation with the hospital and Titan, or else Philip would have nothing to lose by talking to the police about Xander’s actions. Xander informed Philip that a revote was underway and that he was confident Titan would carry the vote. After some sniping, Philip warned Xander to watch his temper.

“We have to find a way to make this work,” Xander growled. “You mean one where you don’t try to beat me with your bare hands or smother me with a pillow?” Philip countered. Xander suggested they keep away from one another. With a nod, Philip promised that the world would believe that they are a united team. “And we can start getting our father’s company back on track,” Philip said.

Xander walked down to Kayla’s office to ask about the results of the vote. “It’s the same as it was before. The board voted to accept EJ’s offer,” Kayla said. In the town square, EJ celebrated as he learned of his victory over Titan. “Not only is my ownership of the hospital confirmed, but I just found out that my son is innocent,” EJ said. Jada walked up with an officer, and she announced that Johnny was under arrest for the attempted murder of EJ.
