This week is going to be a hard one for longtime Days of our Lives fans and longtime DAYS characters alike. It's the end of John Black, something we've known was coming since last fall when actor Drake Hogestyn passed away from pancreatic cancer one day shy of his 71st birthday. DAYS has crafted a story befitting the beloved hero John was and still is, as the character was still hanging on at the end of today's episode. However, that didn't mean it wasn't another tear-jerker. While Marlena and John's children waited for news and Marlena remembered John quite literally saving her very soul, Steve was overwhelmed with guilt. After all, he was the one who called John to help them get the Versavix, knowing he had just returned home after a long and dangerous mission. Then, seeing John all bandaged in a hospital bed brought him back to 1986 when Victor Kiriakis first entrusted him to take care of "The Pawn" — a man with no name and no past whose face was completely bandaged after plastic surgery. Steve told "The Pawn" that he could always trust his old buddy Patch to take care of him, but nearly 40 years later, he let his friend down. It was a tough pill for Steve and us to swallow as we recalled those days long ago and then remembered what is coming soon.
