Loves may come and go in life, but when it comes to daytime, sometimes it feels like couples begin and end in the blink of an eye. That hasn’t been the case with Days of Our Lives‘ Jada, though, who’s only really had two relationships since she showed up in Salem: Eric and Rafe. Both of those collapsed in the soapiest ways possible, but hey, maybe third time’s the charm?
And that, potentially, is where Shawn comes in. When Elia Cantu spoke with Soaps.com, we talked a bit about Jada and Shawn. Things initially happened fast between them because, Cantu explained, they both kind of bonded over their respective trauma. “You know, with him with what was going through with Belle, what she was going through [with Rafe/Arnold]. And they’re both very familiar with each other, so sometimes, in life, that just happens when you’re in that place. You’re very vulnerable.”
Still, Jada pulled back from that moment the second she learned Rafe wasn’t really Rafe. And once she got her real love back, she was all in once again — until she told her beau about that night with Shawn.
Rafe was so thrown, he couldn’t even think straight, which is probably why he ended up in bed with Sami, assuming Jada was still sleeping with Shawn. About the only thing Shawn was doing with Jada, though, was being a good friend — despite his own feelings for the commissioner.
And now with Jada having ended things with Rafe and the PI out of town on a job (but don’t worry, it’s not permanent), she’s been returning the favor with Shawn. Because Jada has been by his side supporting her friend as he’s struggled with the possibility of his dad dying all over again. She knows what it likes to lose a father, so she understands better than many people what Shawn’s going through.
When we asked Cantu if she thought Jada and Shawn had potential to grow into something real, she shared, “I think it’s always fun when two different people get together that haven’t [been together before]. I think that’s an exciting part, like, ‘Oh, we’ve never seen this pair before!’ And so I think it brought a level of excitement” to the characters.
As for a real relationship, “ I think they have a lot in common,” Jada’s portrayer shares, “and I think they do vibe well for sure. The chemistry is great!”
A big part of that is due, she shares to Shawn’s portrayer. “Brandon Beamer as an actor is awesome,” Cantu happily shared, “so it’s really fun working with him. It’s easy when you have a partner like that, so I think that can come across” in something like that scene where Shawn was teaching Jada how to properly play darts.
“The darts scene I actually really liked,” Cantu shared. “That was a fun thing to do. I remember when we rehearsed that, we’re just practicing and preparing our lines and going over it. It was just so playful and so fun.”
And fun is key when building a new romance onscreen; especially one rooted in as much trauma and Shawn and Jada’s lives. Of course, whether or not this blooms into a romance remains to be seen. Jada’s still fresh off of breaking up with Rafe, after all. And besides dealing with Belle moving on with EJ, Shawn also just had to question Jada about her possibly shooting his ex’s new man! It’s all a bit… twisted, to say the least.
But that’s life in Salem! It may have taken Jada a little to warm up to how weird things get in this town, but now that she has, hopefully a lasting romance is next.
