New York Rangers fans have come to know Will Cuylle for his hard-nosed game and physicality, which earned him the 2024-25 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award.
He’s bringing that same energy to Team Canada for the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship, and people are starting to take notice.
While Cuylle hasn’t been getting as much ice time as he’s usually accustomed to, but Team Canada head coach Dean Evason has been impressed with what he;s seen from Cuylle thus far.
“We see the same thing, big, physical skates all around player,” Evason said of Cuylle. “It's unfortunate and or fortunate that we have 13 forwards, and some guys get not as much ice time as they normally get, so maybe don't get into the game, but we really like the way that he plays the game. His presence moving forward, his physicality, will be a big part of our success.”
Cuylle scored his first goal of the tournament on Tuesday night in Canada’s 5-0 win over Team France.
The 23-year-old forward has been mostly playing a fourth line role for Canada. However he’s not letting his ego or pride get in the way of making an impact.
“I think I just want to come out here and play hard,” Cuylle said about his individual goals for the World Championship. “Obviously, I want to contribute in any way I can, whatever role I’m in, so that’s where my head is at right now.”
Canada currently holds a 3-0 record as we are a few days into the tournament.
