Detroit Lions Ready to Give 3x Pro Bowler Contract Extension “He’s earned an extension”

The Detroit Lions have been aggressive in locking up some of their own talent this offseason as they have agreed to contract extensions with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell. However, it appears the team is not done locking up players to long-term deals.

While making an appearance on WXYT  on Thursday, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes discussed how they are in discussions of a contract extension for quarterback Jared Goff.

“First and foremost, he’s earned an extension. It’s important, it’s a high priority for us and both sides are working really, really hard and these things just take time.” h/t Detroit Free Press

Jared Goff is in the final season of a four-year, $134 million contract ($110 million guaranteed) he signed as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.  He has looked well in his career as the former first-overall pick has gone 66-50-1 while completing 67.3% of his passes for 30,429 yards with 185 touchdown passes to 82 interceptions.

Goff is a three-time Pro Bowler and is preparing for a potential Super Bowl run after losing in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco Giants.

What should we expect out of the Detroit Lions this season?

The Lions have been an outstanding team that is young and is beginning to pay people. The team has an outstanding offense that largely is returning from last season. However, they addressed their weak secondary by drafting Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold in the first round and Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2.

With the division improving as the Green Bay Packers get a year more of chemistry as well as their significant upgrades as well as the Chicago Bears completely revitalizing their franchise, things are not going to be a walk in the park. However, do not overlook the Lions winning the NFC North last season and being the third seed as they won a pair of playoff games and dominated the first half of the NFC Championship before losing.

This Detroit Lions team should be able to win the division again this year so it will be interesting to see how the schedule look, as it releases next week.
