Devon Levi continues to torch the AHL since he was sent back down by the Sabres last November. Since returning to Rochester, Levi is second in the league in wins with 18, tied for first in shutouts with five, third in goals-against average, and fifth in save percentage. Levi was already at the top of the midseason AHL awards race for the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL’a most outstanding goaltender. After this week, he may have solidified himself as the front-runner for the award.
Levi was as perfect as you can get from a goaltender this past week, as he stopped all 56 shots he saw and denied all five shootout attempts he faced. Levi was coming off back-to-back regulation losses for the first time in his career the week prior with two tough losses to Syracuse and Laval. Levi made 26 saves against Cleveland for a 4-0 win on Wednesday. Then followed it up on Saturday, as he shutout Toronto with 30 saves, and five shootout saves to help the Americans to a 1-0 win.
The 2025 AHL All-Star was acquired in a trade with the Florida Panthers back in 2021 and has since made 39 appearances in Buffalo with a 17-17-2 record and a 3.29 goals-against average. At one point many people looked at the 23-year-old as the goalie of the future in Buffalo, however, he hasn’t been able to find his stride yet with the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has secured his spot as the number-one goalie in Buffalo, but that doesn’t mean that Levi is out of the question as a top goalie on the main roster. If the Sabres can figure out their defensive issues, they could arguably have one of the best goalie tandems in the league. The question remains, when will Levi get called up again?
My prediction is that Levi will be back up with the Sabres after the Trade Deadline on March 7th. James Reimer is currently the backup goalie, but I could see GM Kevyn Adams either trading Reimer or buying out his contract at the deadline. Although the season is far from over, as of right now it seems like a slim chance the Sabres will make the playoffs. Giving Levi these extra games will get him ready for next year in hopes that he crack the main roster once again.
