Dianne Buswell opens up on baby plans as BBC Strictly star shares sweet hope for 'future kids'

Dianne Buswell may be the reigning Strictly Come Dancing champion, a new Bafta winner, and happily loved up with boyfriend Joe Sugg, but there’s still one thing she dreams of: having children.

The 36-year-old dancer has always been maternal. Growing up in Australia with two older brothers left her longing for a younger sibling to care for.

She said: “Ever since I was a little girl, I used to want a little sister or brother. I was always the babysitter for all my little cousins – I’ve always been a real lover of children. They fascinate me so much.”

While she’s not planning to start a family just yet, Buswell has been working on a project that she hopes her future children would love- a series of Bluey Dancealongs.

The videos, which teach kids dance routines set to Bluey musical hits, will appear on the official Bluey YouTube channel.

She said: “I always think that in the future, if I was to have my own kids, that they would be able to potentially watch this. It plays at the back of my mind and that’s pretty cool.”

Filmed at Bluey’s World in Brisbane, the dancealongs were part of a whirlwind year for Buswell , who also spent time visiting family in Western Australia, enjoyed a mini-break in Bruges, and went on safari in South Africa with Sugg, 33.

However, it’s now back to work, with the Dianne & Vito- Red Hot And Ready tour beginning in June, followed by Strictly rehearsals in August.

“We had a couple of days in Bruges, which was lovely,” she said, “And Joe and I got to do a trip to South Africa as well, which was incredible- and I got to go home to Australia. I feel like there’s a big chunk of work coming up but I definitely have prioritised downtime.”

Buswell admitted that even as a pro, the physical demands of Strictly take their toll.

“I love moving my body. I do it a lot for mental health and it just makes me so happy, but when I go back to dance, it’s a different lot of muscles you’re using and you do feel it.

“When celebrities say, ‘Wow, this is intense on my body!’ I’m like, ‘I understand!’ If I’ve had a month or two off, my body goes into shock mode.”

Last year, Buswell and her Strictly celebrity partner Chris McCausland captured the hearts of viewers as they tackled the challenge of teaching a blind comedian to dance.

Their connection and shared sense of humour led them all the way to the Glitterball Trophy and a Bafta for Most Memorable TV Moment.

In her emotional acceptance speech, Buswell reflected on their journey, recalling the moment McCausland performed their winning dance:

“He closed his eyes and he smiled a smile I’ve never seen from him before and that meant it came straight from his heart. This moment meant so much to the both of us, so I’m so thrilled that we have this.”

She admitted that dancing with McCausland also taught her an important life lesson, saying: “Before, I was always looking for perfection.

"But with Chris, if something wasn’t perfect, I almost loved it even more. For people to resonate with it on an emotional level is even more powerful. He taught me that.”

Since joining Strictly in 2017, Buswell’s life has transformed.

She reflected: “I wonder if I didn’t join the show, what I’d be doing now. It’s mad but it’s a ride I’ve enjoyed.”

Every Strictly series brings new challenges and new celebrity partners. Buswell makes it her mission to understand each one.“

I do my research so that I know more about them,” she said. “But you always find out the most about them when you work with them in the room.”
