It’s all fun and songs until someone gets ejected. A day after Jazz Chisholm, Jr. was tossed in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Yankees extra-inning loss in Cincinnati, New York Yankees manager said that former Bronx Bomber Jose Trevino might have to take some of the blame.
Boone told reporters before Wednesday's game that there was a “pretty strong case” that Chisholm should not have been ejected, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. Chisholm, who had struck out in the top of the ninth, was still stewing about a low strike call when he took the field in the bottom of the inning.
That’s when things unraveled.
Home plate umpire Mark Wegner was still near the plate when he turned and ejected Chisholm from across the diamond. Boone indicated that Trevino appeared to direct Wegner’s attention to third base.
Trevino, who was traded to the Reds this offseason, has seemed to enjoy having his former teammates in Cincinnati this week. He trolled Aaron Judge on Monday night, using the Yankees’ captain’s walk-up song, Swag Surfin, as his own. He then caught Carlos Rodon off guard when he came to the plate to the Yankees’ lefty’s warm-up song.
Boone didn’t deny that Chisholm was frustrated, but he took issue with how the situation was handled. Boone is notorious for getting in umpires' faces, many times just as a distraction so his players don’t get tossed.
“I don’t want him getting tossed there,” Boone said. “I want me to get tossed there in those situations.”
Chisholm told reporters he was still talking about the pitch but didn’t say anything personal. “I looked at [Wegner] and said, ‘Why are you looking at me?’ and that’s when I got tossed,” he said. “I didn’t say nothing crazy.”
The ejection came at a critical moment in a tight game. Boone had to scramble to fill the spot at third base.
