"Don't change something if it works": NHL fans debate Tage Thompson's take on Buffalo Sabres alternate jersey

Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson voiced his desire for the team to switch to the iconic red goat head jersey. Notably, the Sabres debuted these jerseys during their inaugural season at Marine Midland Arena, now known as KeyBank Center.

The goathead jerseys, predominately black with striking red, white, and silver accents, quickly became a fan favorite.

"We should go to (those jerseys) permanently," said Thompson - via BR/Open Ice.

Moreover, this era also saw a major redesign of the team's logo, replacing the original with a fierce buffalo's head, affectionately referred to as the goat head.

NHL fans debated Tage Thompson's opinion to permanently switch to the red goat head jersey.

"They should stay as alternates sabres logo is very classic the way it is. Don’t change something if it works."

Another fan chimed in and said:

"100% they look sick !"

Here are some of the other top reactions to Tage Thompson's jersey take on X:

"Yes. Most teams have updated their logos. The original is boring and doesn't pop. Black and red is so sick with the evil goat. The old can still be worn on throwback nights," said one X user.
"Didn’t the fan base just fight for years to go back to the original uniforms though? Best case would be rotating them like they currently do IMO," another commented.
"Yes. Blue and Gold is not the Sabres. The black and red that took them to the finals and kept them known as one of the most dominant teams of the late 90s and early 2000s IS," one fan commented.
"When I see that jersey I actually think of a great sabres franchise, they had many good teams during my childhood. The blue and yellow just had a stink to it after so many missed playoffs," tweeted another.

Tage Thompson praises former teammate after Stanley Cup win

Tage Thompson praised former teammate Kyle Okposo, sharing his excitement at seeing Okposo win the Stanley Cup (via THN):

"I played a lot with him last season, and I was on a line with him," Thompson said. "It was awesome seeing him win a Cup. He's been our captain since I've been there, and just an unreal guy, down to earth. He'd give me the shirt off his back."
"He just wants everyone else to succeed before him. And he finally got what he deserved there."

Okposo joined the Florida Panthers for the 2023-24 season and achieved the ultimate success by winning the Stanley Cup. Before his trade to the Panthers, the 36-year-old served as the captain of the Buffalo Sabres.
