Move over, Dr. Rolf, because there’s a new medical professional on Days of Our Lives who may very well be able to pull off miracles! And what’s even better? He’s not a mad scientist! At least, we don’t think so. Instead, Dr. Jeffrey Russell is a respected medical professional working at Salem University Hospital developing treatments the legal and safe way.
The last part is key, because that seems to be the big sticking point in using his treatment to potentially save Bo’s life. Unlike Rolf, who is all too happy to experiment on people with his medical marvels and drugs, on Wednesday’s Days of Our Lives episode, Dr. Russell refused Kayla access to his potentially game-changing sepsis treatment that he’s working on. As he said, it hasn’t even been moved beyond animal testing yet.
If he spits in the face of FDA rules and regulations to give Kayla and Bo an untested drug, that could derail the whole research process and ruin the possibility of the drug ever being developed to help the public at large. Even if it works, they could be sacrificing saving countless lives for one. He’s not willing to do that, even for his boss.
That look Kayla shot him as he walked out of her office, though, means this is far from over. Kayla’s going to save Bo one way or another. But how far will she go? Would she just steal the drug they’re developing and administer it to Bo herself? Or would she hold Dr. Russell’s desire to get out of his contract and take his drug to a private lab over his head? “Let me try it on my brother, and you can get out to make your fortune. Otherwise, you’re stuck here.”
We know she’s not about to let this go, but what is Kayla willing to risk to save her brother? Her job? Her medical license? Heck, she doesn’t even know how the drug works in humans, she could be risking Bo’s life! We guess this is what happens when you’re used to be handed some random untested drug by a mad scientist and told it’ll save a patient or two.
Michael Dietz is playing the good Dr. Russell and, as Soap Opera Digest reported when we learned he was joining the show, he’ll stick around for a story arc. So this will not be the last we’ve seen of him, for better or worse for Kayla!
Dietz is likely very familiar to longtime daytime fans, as he got his start on soaps playing Dr. Joe Scanlon on General Hospital spinoff Port Charles from 1997-99. And CBS viewers may recognize him from The Bold and the Beautiful, as Dr. Mark Maclaine, the son of Clarke Garrison and Margo Maclaine. Or maybe from Guiding Light as he took over the role of Alan-Michael Spaulding after Rick Hearst (now Ric on General Hospital) left.
Whether he’ll be playing the hero, the villain or someone in between in Salem, though, remains to be seen. Knowing Days of Our Lives, it’ll probably be somewhere in between!
