The Pittsburgh Penguins might find it hard to trade star defenseman Erik Karlsson but there could be a perfect suitor waiting in the wings.
Sporstnet's Elliotte Friedman came up with a "theory" and speculated that Karlsson could be an ideal fit for the Stars during Monday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast, just hours before The Athletic's Josh Yohe reported Pittsburgh's willingness to trade him.
According to sources talking to Yohe, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas would trade Karlsson "in a heartbeat" if the right deal presented itself.
Meanwhile, Friedman acknowledged the financial complexities of any potential move but theorized that Karlsson's offensive skill set could complement Dallas' strong defensive foundation.
"Here's my theory, Erik Karlsson," Friedman said. "Again, I want to stress, theory. Okay? He played really well at the 4 Nations. Do you know who I could see him thriving with? Dallas."
Karlsson, 34, carries a $10 million cap hit for two more seasons after this one, with the San Jose Sharks already retaining $1.5 million of his total $11.5 million salary, part of an eight-year, $92 million deal.
His contract, which drops to $9 million in cash after this season, includes a full no-movement clause, meaning any trade would require his approval.
"It's a big cap hit," Friedman said. "Remember his cash really goes down this summer, especially after his bonus is paid. Now, maybe whoever goes and gets him waits until after that.
"The thing with Dallas is--boy, do they defend. Great defensive team," Friedman said referring to how Karlsson could boost the offensive prowess of that defensive unit.
Karlsson has recorded 40 points in 60 games for the Penguins this season while averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per game.
He also had a strong showing for Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off, appearing in all three games played by his nation scoring one goal and assisting two more.
