A quarterback controversy is always fun and exciting. For the New Orleans Saints, it hold plenty of intrigue and mystery this offseason for Kellen Moore's team. Both rookie QB Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler seem to have a notable chance to win the starting role for Moore's offense.
ESPN's Ben Solak discussed the QB competition in a unique way recently. Instead of anything about performance, he pinpointed the jersey numbers for Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
Saints QB Spencer Rattler is now wearing 2, which gives him a leg up in the Saints QB competition against rookie Tyler Shough, who is wearing 6 (an inferior quarterbacking number). Were Rattler still wearing 18, he'd have less of a lead. -- Ben Solak
This comment is, of course, a bit tongue-in-cheek from Solak. The aesthetic of the quarterback should not determine their starting role, but it is always interesting to see what key players decide to wear as their number. For rookies, it is always a massive decision that they look forward to from the time they are drafted.
“Certainly there’s times where if the opportunity presents itself, you feel like it’s a really good fit, you’d love to do it,” Moore said, via the team. “We feel like we have some good guys here that can certainly mentor each other at the same time going through this process. . . . We’ll see how this whole thing progresses. The roster is a moving dynamic thing throughout the offseason process.” -- Kellen Moore on his QB competition
Jake Haener remains the other QB option in the room for New Orleans. It would be tough for him to beat out Rattler and Shough both, though.a
