The Boston Bruins had a busy July 1, as they brought in an array of new players. Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jordan Harris was among them, as the Bruins signed the Haverill, Massachusetts native to a one-year, $825,000 contract for the 2025-26 season.
The Bruins signing Harris was entirely understandable. With the Bruins not bringing back Parker Wotherspoon, they needed a depth defenseman with NHL experience to replace him. They found just that in Harris, and he has the potential to be a decent pickup for the Bruins.
When looking at the Bruins' defensive group, Harris will likely serve as their seventh defenseman and jump into the lineup when injuries arise or when shakeups are needed. Yet, when noting that Harris is just 24 years old, there is reason to believe that he still could take another step forward in his development this campaign.
Early on in his NHL career, Harris has shown signs of promise. For example, during the 2022-23 season with the Canadiens, he recorded career highs with four goals, 13 assists, and 17 points in 65 games. He has also been known for his puck-moving ability and defensive play, so he should work well as a depth blueliner for Boston. This is especially so when noting that he can play both the left and the right side.
While this past season with the Columbus Blue Jackets was a bit of a tough one for Harris, he could benefit from a change of scenery with his hometown Bruins. If he taps into his potential a bit more and blossoms into a solid part of the Bruins' blueline, he will be a good value addition for the Bruins. It will be interesting to see if he takes that next step with the Bruins from here.
