Ex-Penguins goaltender Magnus Hellberg signs in Sweden

Former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Magnus Hellberg has signed a three-year contract with Djurgårdens IF of the Swedish Hockey League.

That team announced the transaction on Thursday.

A native of Sweden, Hellberg spent the 2024-25 campaign with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL). In 41 games, he posted a 24-14-1 record, a 2.69 goals against average, a .904 save percentage and one shutout.

The left-catching Hellberg (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) was a member of the Penguins for part of one season in 2023-24. Playing in three NHL contests, he had a 1-0-0 record, a 2.50 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

He primarily played for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL that season. In 19 games with that club, he had a 9-8-2 record, a 2.92 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.

Hellberg, 34, has enjoyed a nomadic professional career over 18 seasons, including stops in Russia and China. Djurgårdens IF will be the 22nd professional team he has played for.

“Every hockey journey is different,” Hellberg said to TribLive in 2023. “Looking back, obviously when I’m older, done playing, I think it’s going to be a pretty cool experience to be able to do what you love and play the game of hockey and live in all these cool places.”
