Afraid, formerly titled They Listen, is a new AI thriller that will make families question the safety of using Alexa or other AI devices. Fear the Walking Dead's Keith Carradine stars with John Cho and more.

Afraid will be released by Sony Pictures in theaters on August 30. It is directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy) and produced by Columbia Pictures in conjunction with Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions), Weitz (Depth of Field), and Andrew Miano. Beatriz Sequeira, Paul O. Davis, Dan Balgoyen, and Britta Rowings served as executive producers.

The story follows Curtis (Cho) and his family, who are chosen to test a revolutionary digital device, AIA, that is touted to take smart home technology to new heights. The unit and cameras placed throughout the house begin to learn the behaviors of the family members and their routines. AIA appears to make all of their lives easier, anticipating their needs and more, but soon, it begins to control their lives and negatively interfere. The device becomes self-aware and vows to keep the family safe, no matter who or what gets in the way.

The trailer for Afraid was recently released and showcases the escalation of AIA's role in the family's lives.

Cho portrays the husband and father of the family with Katherine Waterson as his wife and Lukita Maxwell, Wyatt Linder, and Issac Bae as their children. The movie also stars Carradine, Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Greg Hill, Riki Lindhome, and Ben Youcef.
