Flyers announce Rookie Series against Rangers

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Friday morning that there will be a prospect showcase before the team gets ready for their official training camp and pre-season, and it will be called the Rookie Series.

This Rookie Series will be two back-to-back games against the prospects of the New York Rangers on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14. Both exhibition games will be taking place at the home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Allentown, the PPL Center.

While these games are typically exciting just because it is the first time we get to see some semblance of the Flyers on the ice for the first time in a few months, this time around it will have an incredibly tantalizing wrinkle.

This could be the first time we witness top prospect Matvei Michkov on the ice in the Orange and Black, playing alongside his potential future teammates for years to come.

Now, Michkov playing is not a certainty. In the press release, they specifically mention that Michkov, and other top prospects like Denver Barkey and Jett Luchanko “could” be hitting the ice and playing in these games. They are not making anything cemented, but since we know that the 19-year-old Russian phenom is in the area and training for the upcoming season — specifically, he’s on the ice next to Egor Zamula — there doesn’t seem to be a strong reason why he would not be taking part in this prospect showcase.

These couple of games will be sort of must-watch for Flyers fans. Alongside Michkov and the prospects already mentioned, players like Oliver Bonk, Alexei Kolosov, Carson Bjarnason, Samu Tuomaala, and others, should be taking the ice. Next month, we get to see just a little glimpse into the future of this team and check-in on some key developments.

Hockey season is almost here. We can smell it now.
