The Philadelphia Flyers made franchise history on Sunday as they fell 2-0 to the Colorado Avalanche, being shut out for the third straight game.
The Flyers have been outscored 23-4 in their last six games.
The Flyers were already down a forward, as they dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen for Sunday’s game, but they played a solid chunk of the game with only six defensemen (11F/6D).
Both Avalanche goals came in the second period, one of which was a power-play goal.
Rather than making a roster move ahead of Sunday’s matchup, the Flyers decided to dress an extra defenseman rather than activating Nicolas Deslauriers.
While the Flyers had enough skaters for the game, injuries plagued the Flyers as multiple defensemen went down in Sunday’s contest.
Cam York left the game in the first period and missed a chunk of time, but he would eventually return to action. However, Rasmus Ristolainenen seemingly got hurt in the second period and did not return to the game or the bench in the third period.
Playing against a high-energy, fast-paced team, the Flyer’s tired skaters were detrimental, especially in the second period.
The Philadelphia Flyers have not scored a goal in three straight games. Their last goal came with 15 seconds remaining in their 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. Scott Laughton scored that goal on an empty net. The Flyers’ last goal against a goaltender came with 17:11 remaining on the clock in the second period of that Devils game. That would make it 217:26 since the Flyers’ last goal against a goaltender.
As the season draws closer to the Four Nations Face-Off break, the Flyers desperately need to break through on the score sheet and build some momentum before the season starts to drag–if it hasn’t already.
The Flyers will remain out west, as they are set to take on the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday, with puck drop slated for 9 P.M. EST from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
