The Philadelphia Flyers are benefitting greatly from acquiring this forward.
During the 2021-22 season, the Philadelphia Flyers made a massive move, trading longtime captain and franchise legend Claude Giroux to the Florida Panthers. With Giroux being in the final year of his deal and wanting to play for a contender, the Flyers did their former superstar a solid.
Giroux's time with the Panthers would prove to be short, as he signed with the Ottawa Senators during the 2022 NHL Offseason. While this trade only truly benefitted the Panthers in the short term, it is still a great one for the Flyers today, mainly because of forward Owen Tippett.
At the time of the trade, Tippett was a promising youngster struggling to break out on a deep Panthers team. However, since being dealt to the Flyers, the 2017 tenth-overall pick has only gotten better, and he has since emerged as a key part of their roster.
During the 2022-23 season with the Flyers, Tippett showed he could be an impactful NHL scorer, recording 27 goals and 49 points in 77 games. However, he took another step forward this past season, posting new career highs with 28 goals, 25 assists, and 53 points.
Due to Tippett's improved play, he earned an eight-year, $49.6 million contract extension with the Flyers in January. Thus, he has officially cemented himself as a long-term part of the Flyers' core. Clearly, acquiring him was a home-run move for Philly. This is especially so when noting that they also acquired a first-round pick and a third-round pick in the move.
It will now be fun to see what Tippett does for an encore for the Flyers in 2024-25. When noting that he is only 25 years old, he undoubtedly has the potential to improve even further from here.
