Flyers Hold on to Early Lead, Beat New Jersey 4-2 Mondy Night

The Philadelphia Flyers come away with the 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in Monday night’s Metropolitan action.

Scoring from Bobby Brink, Joel Farabee, Garnet Hathaway, and Scott Laughton (ENG) all scored in Monday’s win.

With the win, the Flyers improved to 23-22-6 on the season, but more importantly, got Philadelphia back in the win column as the metro-madness continues.

After building momentum throughout the first period, the Flyers struck fast on their first power-play opportunity as Bobby Brink blasted a shot past Devils’ goalie Jake Allen. It took just six seconds with the man advantage for them to score.

Joel Farabee followed the Brink score with his own goal just 28 seconds later. Lightning struck for the Flyers in the first period, which also carried that momentum into the second period.

Less than three minutes into the second period, Garnet Hathaway redirected a Cam York shot to give Philly a 3-0 lead, which would be enough.

The last time we saw Sam Ersson, he had five goals against him in the Flyers’ 6-1 loss to the New York Rangers.

Ersson turned in a completely different game Monday night, stunning one of the best offenses in hockey yet again. The Swedish netminder tallied 31 saves in the win, including multiple impressive stands. Both Devils’ goals went off the stick of a Flyers player, but it did not phase Ersson.

With the win Monday night, Ersson got back on track with his impressive play out of the holiday break.

In a season where special teams have been anything but a strong suit for the Flyers, it played a significant role in the team’s win Monday.

First of all, the Flyers built a massive amount of momentum off a double minor penalty kill early in the first period. Despite being down a man, it seemed as if they were more productive on offense than the Devils were at the time. Scott Laughton and Garnet Hathway both produced great short-handed chances, and the unit easily killed that first penalty.

Bobby Brink’s quick power-play score capitalized on that momentum. Brink scored his second power-play goal against the Devils in as many games this season and put the Flyers on the board.

The Flyers will finish the home-and-home with the Devils when they travel back to Newark, New Jersey, on Wednesday. Puck drop at the Prudential Center is at 7 P.M. EST.
