The Philadelphia Flyers extended their point streak to six games as they took down the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in overtime Tuesday night.
With their win, the Flyers’ record improved to 22-20-6. Joel Farabee earned two points tonight with a goal and an assist, while Rasmus Ristolainen scored the overtime winner.
In the game preview, I mentioned that the Couturier line—Joel Farabee-Sean Couturier-Matvei Michkov—was something to watch in this game.
They have been producing since the line’s origin, which would continue Tuesday night. Joel Farabee scored the game-opening score in the second period, with assists from Couturier and Michkov.
The whole line got involved in what was an all-around impressive effort for the score.
Farabee also earned an assist on the game-winner, giving him four points now in three games since returning from being a healthy scratch.
In what was one of the faster 60 minutes of hockey the Flyers played all season, it was only fitting that the game went to overtime. There were not many high-danger chances in the first two periods, but as both teams got tired, the defense began to allow good looks.
The Red Wings knotted the game up at one within the first 30 seconds of the third period, but Sem Ersson shut them down for the remainder of the game, including OT.
“Great. Pretty goal,” Rasmus Ristolainen joked postgame about his overtime winner.
Pretty goal is just about the opposite way to describe the score. The overtime winner was nothing shy of a mess. Owen Tippett brought the puck to the net but was initially stopped by the Detroit netminder Alex Lyon. It was brought to the goal line by Mo Sieder before eventually being pushed in by Ristolaien.
After a long–and I mean LONG wait, the goal was eventually awarded to Ristolainen.
The Flyers will take Wednesday off before heading to New York City to take on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
