The Philadelphia Flyers announced their first round of training camp roster cuts without much fanfare. It was notable, however, that first-round picks Jett Luchanko and Oliver Bonk were not among the prospects who returned to their junior hockey clubs.
Flyers head coach John Tortorella appears to be really fond of the skillsets and work ethic of both players, and those are two qualities high atop the Flyers’ wishlist when it comes to rebuilding this team and making a Stanley Cup contender.
We know for sure that Flyers rookie sensation Matvei Michkov is not going anywhere, and that might be why the young Russian is being featured in the EA Sports NHL franchise for the first time in EA Sports NHL 25.
Michkov is starting out on the lower side of the Flyers’ NHL forwards, though he does carry the same overall rating as San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini. By the end of the year, we think he will be closer to where Connor Bedard is currently ranked ahead of the game’s official release on Oct. 4.

The Montreal Canadiens walloped the Flyers in Monday’s exhibition tilt between the two sides, but even after adding Patrik Laine, the team’s forward depth could still use a boost. Another Canadiens trade… really?
Well, the reality of the situation actually draws parallels to where things are at in Philadelphia. The Canadiens have many players of similar contractual status or play style, which restricts how creative they can be with roster construction in the short term.
As a result, some young forwards who might normally make the team have to spend additional time in the AHL or, in rare cases, juniors.
One way to clear that roadblock, and perhaps the simplest, is to execute some trades around the NHL.
