While the Philadelphia Flyers are still very much rebuilding, there is certainly excitement heading into the 2024-25 season. The biggest reason for it is because top prospect Matvei Michkov is set to play his first NHL season with the club.

Michkov is expected to be a huge part of the Flyers' rebuild, as the 2023 seventh-overall pick has all the potential in the world to become a future star in the NHL. Because of this, he is a very valuable part of their roster.

Due to Michkov's importance, the Flyers are going to protect the youngster at all costs. Flyers captain Sean Couturier made this abundantly clear in tonight's (Sept. 28) pre-season matchup against the Boston Bruins.

After Bruins defenseman Billy Sweezey got into a scrum with Michkov, Couturier immediately defended the Flyers' top prospect and dropped the gloves. Couturier is not necessarily known for his fighting skills, but he handled himself well against the Bruins' 6-foot-2 defenseman.

This is precisely the kind of stuff that the Flyers want to see from their captain. He sent a clear message that the Flyers will not allow Michkov to be pushed around without any consequences.
